Privacy policy
Almost nothing — not out of modesty, but by construction. PlayHearsal has no account, nothing you record is uploaded, and it does not measure what you do with it.
The data controller is SoftMedia CTS, which develops and publishes PlayHearsal and hosts this site. For any privacy question, or to exercise the rights below, write to . For anything else about the app or the site: .
Everything you create in the app — plays, acts, characters, audio recordings, line text and settings — is written into the app's private storage on your device. No copy of it exists on our side — the only thing that can ever reach us is an activity log you choose to send (below). Delete a play in the app, or uninstall the app, and the content goes with it.
The app asks for microphone permission in two situations: when you record a line, and when you start the prompter. In both cases the microphone is live only for as long as that action lasts. Recordings stay as files on your phone.
The prompter follows your line as you speak it. To do that it uses the operating system's speech recognition — SFSpeechRecognizer on iOS, the system speech recognition service on Android — not a service of ours.
The app does not force strict on-device mode, because on many phones that mode is slower or missing for the language you rehearse in. This means the system may send the audio to Apple or Google for processing, under their own privacy policies. We never receive, see or store that audio, nor the recognised text — it lives only in the app's memory, for as long as the line lasts.
That is why the app shows an explicit notice before the first use of the prompter and asks for your consent. The prompter is optional: you can rehearse without it, and if you decline, the app never starts speech recognition at all.
In one case only: when you open a link to a play, the app downloads the play file from playhearsal.com. That is an ordinary web request, recorded in the server logs like any other visit (see below). Otherwise the app works without internet.
Export and sharing always start from you and go through the operating system's share sheet — you pick the app and the recipient. PlayHearsal sends nothing on its own.
The app keeps an activity log — a plain text file recording what it did while you rehearsed, so that a problem can be understood after the fact. It stays on your phone and is never sent automatically.
If something goes wrong you can send it to us, from the share sheet's Send activity log button. Nothing leaves the phone until you press send, and the app shows you the whole log first — read it before you decide. What arrives with it is:
No audio and no recordings are ever sent — the log is text. We use it only to find the fault you reported, we do not link it to anything else, and we pass it to no one. It is deleted after 90 days, or sooner if you ask us.
Like any web server, ours notes each request: IP address, date and time, the address requested, the response code, the browser type and, where present, the referring page. We use them strictly to keep the site running and secure. They are deleted automatically after 14 days.
The site is served through Cloudflare, which sits in front of the server for speed and protection against abuse. Cloudflare processes your requests as our provider, under its own privacy policy.
The pages load two typefaces (Source Sans 3 and Courier Prime) from fonts.googleapis.com. As with any file fetched from another domain, your browser tells Google your IP address and the page the request comes from. The third typeface, Fraunces, is served from our own server. There are no other external resources on the site.
The site sets no cookies at all: no analytics, no advertising, none of any other kind.
Until July 2026, installing on an iPhone required the device to be listed in the Apple development profile. Anyone who went through that flow left on our server the enrolment date, the name typed into the form, the device identifier (UDID), the model, the iOS version and the device serial number — used solely to add the phone to the Apple profile.
The flow has been shut down and the collected data deleted. Installing on iPhone now goes through TestFlight, which tells us nothing about your phone. If the old oncue_udid cookie is still in your browser, nothing reads it any more and you can delete it.
When you install through TestFlight, the App Store or Google Play, Apple and Google collect their own data — the tester's email address, install statistics, crash reports — as independent controllers, under their own policies. We only see aggregate reports, in which you are not identifiable.
For server logs and Cloudflare, the basis is our legitimate interest in keeping a working, secure site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR); the period is 14 days. The data from the old iOS device enrolment was deleted along with the flow itself.
For an activity log you send us, the basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), given by pressing send on that particular log; the purpose is to diagnose the problem you reported, and the period is 90 days. You can withdraw consent at any time by writing to us, and we will delete what you sent. Apart from that, nothing you create in the app reaches us.
You have the right to ask for access to the data we hold about you, its rectification or erasure, restriction of processing, portability, and to object to processing based on legitimate interest. You can withdraw your consent at any time. Write to — we answer within 30 days at the latest. If our answer does not satisfy you, you may lodge a complaint with the Romanian data protection authority (ANSPDCP), dataprotection.ro, or with the supervisory authority in your own country.
PlayHearsal is a tool for actors and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from them.
If we change something material, we update the date at the top of this page and, where the change affects you directly, we say so in the app as well.
